Another thing that can affect it is noise on the line, ring your telephone
company and ask them to reduce or turn off AGC (automatic gain control).
Also too many phones faxes etc. on the one master socket can cause
slowdowns.
Doesn't happen here now but check that you're not on a shared line.
I too don't use dial up anymore but when I did got around 51K, I live in N.
