While this is what the OP originally requested, when I asked "why" they
wanted such a thing - they stated their main purpose was to "boot up from in
case of problems with my laptop and to use it while fixing what was wrong" -
the BartPE CD is perfect for this. The OP could use the BartPE CD to load
up and at least attempt to repair their system or transfer their files from
the defunct (unbootable) hard disk to an external medium (ie: another
computer on the network, USB drive, etc.) Also, it does give minimal
functionality - in that you can map network drives, surf the Internet and a
lot of other things, depending on your plugins for BartPE.

Again - as I originally stated - I do not believe you can boot from an
external hard disk drive with Windows XP (or other NT Based operating
systems.)

Again - as far as I know - it does not.

Sorry if you misunderstood my reasoning for recommending BartPE. It merely
gives the op the ability to use their laptop and figure out/fix what is
wrong in an emergency situation (at least gives them ability to access NTFS
drives.)
