frequent crashiing

It is almost certainly a software issue.
It sounds to me like you need to have a professional look
at your computer. It is likely that it is infested with
spyware and all kinds of garbage that cannot adequately be
addressed in a newsgroup.
I do not mean to denigrate your skills, I'm simply saying
that the sheer number of things that could possibly be
causing the problems you describe require a skilled person
to assess.
Find a local shop, someone you trust, and let them have a
look. A technician with experience in this sort of thing
should be able to resolve your issues within a couple of
hours.
If you try to fix it yourself you may make things worse.
