A motherboard swap changes low-level or system components.

XP usually won't boot due to a change in the Mass Storage controller
driver. (IDE/SATA).
The best solution is to do a Repair install. This strips out the Devices
in the system configuration and loads the proper ones. It should retain
your programs, settings & user data.
Simply boot to your XP CD-ROM. Do not take the "R" for Recover
console but continue into the setup process. XP should detect the
existing installation and offer an option to do a Repair install.

Be careful, if done incorrectly you can overwrite your original install
and end up with a "Clean" installation that WILL remove all your
personal data. If you have the capability to create a System Image,
do so before you get started.
