Start-up question

A new WXP installation produces error messages, about Windows Installer and
about Norton, each time it starts.
They don't do anything but it is a waste of time having to close them.
Where is the list of tasks that operate automatically at each start-up,
and how do I know which ones are needed and which are causing the nuisance
and can be removed?!
I'm not referring to the startup section of the Start/All Programs list;
that is empty.
