Cannot open windows task manager

I can't open Windows Task Manager. If I click ctrl-alt-det, the task manager
will flash on the screen for about one second then it disappears. The same
things happens when I try to access the Task Manager by right-clicking the
taskbar. Any ideas on what could be the problem?
