wow, this thread surely has lots of action, with some insults to boot.

anyway, if you're happy with 98, it really doesn't make sense to
upgrade just because in the future 98 won't be supported...wait for
that time...xp uses more resources then 98...if you have stability and
familiarity with 98, imho, save the money...wait.

now, if you decide to update, I have never had an issue with updating
to xp...never, if you can image the drive, this is always, (imho)
preferable to a clean install, as you'll be more familiar with your os,
and you'll have the old image to fall back on...which I have never had
to use...I suggest uninstalling your av before you upgrade though.

so of course, image the drive

I always like the idea of a dual boot instead of an upgrade as
well...this is a GREAT suggestion by alex.

now, some people claim that xp has slowed down on their watch over
time, I don't doubt their experience, however;

on my watch, my experience, (because of the optimizing protocol of xp),
the xp OS's have become FASTER over time...MUCH faster.

I don't use or recommend registry cleaners either.

if you keep malicious programs off your box, and if you don't
circumvent P's native "optimizing protocol", or get involved with those
"tweaks" that are counter productive, I think you'll have the same "x p
erience" as I have.

most of the time, people that think xp "slows down over time" have used
some of those "tweaks" you find posted around the INTERNET that are
actually counter productive..(not to say all tweaks are counter
productive, but plenty of them cause issues on computers that people
don't even recognize were caused by these "tweaks")

anyway, that's off topic and I apologize for responding to those
issues.

in any event, if you find as others have that your os has slowed down,
you can then of course reformat...I don't think that'll be necessary
