If you have some sort of Recovery Disk that you got with your OEM
machine (HP, Compaq, eMachines, etc.) then doing a recovery like that
will return your computer to factory condition. Anything you've added
since you opened the box and set the machine up, programs and data,
will be gone. If you have a non-OEM installation (like a retail copy of
XP) and you format the drive and clean install, the results will be the
same.
You can do this or you can take the machine to a good local computer
repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them
clean your machine for you. In any case, you should back up your data
regularly.
