Disk Space and a cry for help

I tried XP a couple of years ago ... wasn't happy with it .... went back
to Win2K. Just got an app that will only run under XP, had a spare 7.5G
partition so thought I'd dig out the CD and try again. Perhaps it'll
grow on me.

CD was slipstreamed to SP1. Installed it plus the needed drivers and
windows security updates and other updates (but not SP2 at this stage).
No apps installed but 4G+ of my 7.5G is gone (including 1.2G pagefile).

Installed SP2. Now 5G+ is used. I'm appalled. What can I do to reduce this?

1. In the \Windows directory, there are a bunch of uninstall folders. I
realise these are there for insurance, but this installation is by way
of a limited testbed that I want to keep fairly small (I also have image
backups at various installation stages). Will it hurt Windows if I
delete these directories? Are there any other things that I can delete,
bearing in mind my objectives.

2. I also have another partition with Win2K installed (actually I have
two other Win2K installation). Is it possible (and safe) to have XP and
one (or both) of the Win2K installations share a page file on an
independent partition. How would I do this?

... Oh Yeah - the cry for help.

How can I stop those infuriating balloons that keep popping up from the
systray? I've turned off "Show popup description for folder and desktop
items" in folder options but it hasn't affected the tray. I've changed
to "Windows Classic" and that didn't help.

Since SP2 it just got worse. I now have a security icon that repeatedly
pops up to remind me that I have the Windows firewall turned off.
Apparently it isn't smart enough to notice that I turned it off
deliberately (I have an external firewall) and feels I should be told
about every 30 seconds. Cancelling it doesn't help. How can I stop these
balloons altogether .... and while I'm about it, how can I get rid of
this icon in the systray altogether?
