Perhaps, If you have access to a second PC, you could load the
drive into it where it isn't required for booting (Another XP machine).
See if the drive will mount, if so the first thing might be to try and
burn data to CD/DVD-R disk. I wouldn't immediately attempt to do
a Chkdsk with Repair or Fix as that might fix the drive, but render the
data inaccessible. It's a low percentage operation. Recently, I had a
drive that would not boot or mount. I removed it and installed in a
workbench PC and it ran long enough for me to retrieve the user's
data. Afterwards, I ran the manufacturer's diagnostics and it indicted
the drive as defective.
