Hi Will,

Thanks for your interest in my problem.

I am the sole user of my PC so I am the Administrator. I am looking at the following key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

When I do as you say, there are four groups: Administrators (me), Creator Owner (don't know who this is), System and Users (me again).

Permissions are as follows:

Administrators: checks in 'Allow' box for Full Control, Read and Special Permissions, other boxes unchecked
Creator Owner: check in 'Allow' box for Special Permissions only, other boxes unchecked
System: check in 'Allow' box for Full Control and Read only. Special Permissions and other boxes unchecked
Users: same as Systems

Needless to say, I can't change the permissions like I can't change or delete values. Fortunately, everything else seems to be working OK on the PC apart from this issue with Registry access.

Any more ideas to try?

  Hi
Right click on the appropriate setting in the Registry and select
Permissions. What have you got enabled for your User Account? It's got to
be an Account with Administrator's rights.

Tried Will's idea of rebooting in order to 'save' the Registry changes but
  it didn't work.
This time I also tried to delete a value but it wouldn't let me. At the
first the modification appears correctly on screen, but then if I click on
another folder within Registry and then back again, the old value is back in
  place.
Is this a completely new problem or has anyone ever met it before?

    | Hi Raymond,
    |
    | OK, I use the Computer Associates product EZArmor for my firewall and
    | antivirus. I recently upgraded this which went OK except that the tray
    icons
    | refused to appear. I had a look at the autorun settings in
    | HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run and saw that it was
    | trying to call up the wrong file - presumably the uninstall had not
    removed
    | the old one for some reason.
    |
    | I modified the value (having backed up the Registry!) and thought I was
    done
    | but, as I said, on reopening Regedit, the changes had not been saved.
    |
    | I have implemented a workaround which is to put links to the two files
    into
    | the Startup folder so I now get my tray icons but it worries me that I
    cannot
    | seem to modify the Registry if I need to.

Try Will's advice--reboot after editing and before reopening regedit.
