Do you have the two machines connected with one cable, or is there a hub or
router in use?

If you are directly connecting the two machines with one cable, you *must*
use a crossover cable. A regular cable will not work.

If you are using a hub, switch, or router, you must use regular cables,
crossovers will not work.

If you are not using a router or some other device to provide IP addresses,
you probably need to give the two network cards fixed IP addresses, for
example:
desktop IP address: 192.168.0.1
laptop IP address: 192.168.0.2

in both cases use 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.

If you are using a router, set both cards to use DHCP.

You'll also need to have sharing enabled on both machines and share
*something*. I have found that it is helpful to add IPX/SPX protocols, and
you will need to have matching accounts.
