Hey Kelly!
I thought everyone had given up on me so I said my thank yous and goodbyes
in a post to Crusty. But noooo....you couldn't let it go. ;P So here it is,
cut and pasted with the same twitchy and heavy fingers that started this
whole mess:
The details, as briefly as I can make them, are:
1) Recent fresh install
2) Reloading all my personal documents, music, videos, favorites, etc. from
backups
3) Fresh install gremlins, such as ASPI not loading/working correctly and
Norton and my sound card driver fighting.
4) I do like to play with all of the settings in Windows.
5) I have a bad habit of not recording the changes that I made.
6) I like to play video games at the highest possible level of detail before
I lose performance.
7) I will enable and disable services trying to get the best video game
performance and still keep all the Windows services
that I like as creature comforts.
8) I am the first one I blame when anything goes wrong with my system. I am
also usually numbers three, five and six.
What prompted me to ask this question to begin with was the fact that when I
reloaded my documents, pictures, music and such,
many of the folders ended up tagged wrong. (By "tagged" I mean selecting
that folders properties>customize>what kind of
folder do you want.) Such as videos in folders tagged as pictures and text
documents in folders tagged as music. Again, yes,
a mistake I made along the line someplace.
Also, I have been finding it humorous how WMP10 has been moving my music
files around. Since they are coming from many
backups, I have duplicate files, files with the wrong name, files with vague
names, you get the picture. WMP10 has not always
been successful finding out who the group was or the album name, especially
on songs covered by other groups.
My most recent problem of Norton and my sound card driver not cooperating
has driven me nearly insane. Writing down blue
screen stop error numbers, looking them up in the KB, recording error
numbers from Norton, looking them up, searching posts
in newsgroups, looking for different drivers, I'm sure you've been there.
Antivirus programs can be a pain sometimes, but
they are without a doubt a necessary piece of software. And they have to be
a pain sometimes to do their job correctly, so
I'm not faulting Norton AV at all. I have been doing a lot of hasty file
saving with this little problem, and know things can
get filed incorrectly when you're tired and rushed.
But I swear, all joking aside, that I have found files, (I've deleted them
and emptied the bin already or I could tell you
exactly) such as readme files (that I've never read in my life) and product
descriptions from software I've downloaded (Like
my updated drivers for the Promise RAID controller and instructions for
using a VIA chip feature that isn't on my
motherboard) mixed in with the folder titled "My Word Documents", which
happens to be a folder that I had accidentally
tagged for music. And I know that I did not purposely put these files into
that folder. I also know that I did not purposely
access those files for any reason. Accidentally, yes, was the first thing I
though. I figured I copied and pasted an extra
file or mis-selected my target. But I've found strange files in the wrong
place three times now, and I just started
wondering: "Well, they were in a folder labeled as music...I had WMP10
looking for music in my generic put-things-here-
until-I-sort-them-out-later folder, they were in there too...could it
have...?"
And I also have this little, partial fragment of a memory about reading
someplace “....intuitively places your files
according to your past patterns..." and again, for some reason, I thought it
was talking about an advanced feature of Windows
or possibly even Office XP. I don't remember though. It could just be
something I read about WMP10's feature, it could be
some strange dream I had, or my brain could just be making things up to make
me look bad. ;) I won't rule out any
possibility. And I never say no, it couldn't be my fault. Well, ok, I did
say it, but I hope everyone knew I was joking.
So, long post even longer, yes, whatever has happened is because of
something I did. I don’t even dispute that those files
ended up in the wrong folder because of an error on my part. I only want to
know is that a feature of Windows or Office? If
it is, how can I turn it off? If it isn't, I will admit that I'm crazy. But
at least it's a happy crazy.
Sorry about the poor formatting. It's been a long day and I want OUT of it!
Don't spend a lot of time on this, its just been my poor, sleep deprived
brain getting too many little bits of info from too many sources on too many
subjects jumbled up. I accept any and all blame for my mistakes, including
this one. Thank you again for your suggestions Kelly, Crusty and everyone
else.
Oh, just to be sure, I've run virus tests from three different sources, all
clean. Also ran spybot and adaware. No real threats detected by them either.
I don't really have much third party software installed Kelly. I have Office
XP, Motherboard Monitor, an assortment of benchmark programs, some ATI video
card overclocking utilities, Norton AV, Zonealarm firewall. I'll give those
suggestions of yours a shot if I see any more strange behavior that I can't
easily blame on my heavy twitchy fingers.
And just to make sure I'm not really in need of professional help, WMP10
DOES have that feature, doesn't it?
