Possibly you have a very restrictive firewall. WindowsXP comes with a
firewall and it might be stoping you from getting certain updates. To see if
this is the case, go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Windows Firewall, choose
"off" option, click ok. Try updating your programs. If the off option is
already chosen, or if after choosing the off option your programs still won't
update, there is a possibility of a non-windowsXP firewall installed on your
computer, or that you are accessing internet over a restrictive network (a
bunch of computer connected togeather, such as in schools, companies,
institutions). If this is the case, contact your system administrator.

Windows firewall can be turned back on at any time following the previous
procedure and selecting "on".
