Blank Profile Screen--Cannot Log In

When I try to log in to my laptop, a screen comes up telling me to click on a
profile to begin (I have had that feature turned off for quite some time),
but the area where the profiles should be is blank. The only thing clickable
on the screen is the link to turn the computer off. The previous time when I
had used the computer without any problems, I had not downloaded anything,
been online, or done anything different. How can I fix this problem and get
my computer to log in?
