Based on that message alone, I have to ask if you're typing in the correct
username / password.

Has the system previously worked with the credentials you are trying to use
now? Can you logon with an administrative account?

Since you said you got this system from work, there is a possibility that it
was a part of a domain; in that case, the domain security policy may have
locked your account. The standard account lockout period is 5 invalid logon
attempts in 30 mins. will lock the system for 30 mins., but many
administrators will make that indefinite (meaning they have to unlock your
account). If waiting 30 mins does not allow you on, then to unlock it,
you'll will have to logon to the system as an admin, remove the system from
the domain (assuming you are no longer going to use the system at work), and
create a local user account for yourself.

It's really hard to give a good answer based solely on what you've given me
so far.
