Was this machine always slow, or has it become slower than it
originally was? If the latter, first go to Control Panel
-Administrative Tools - Event View and make sure there aren’t any disk
or cdrom paging errors, as these can cause sluggish system
performance, as well as indicating imminent h/w failure.
Scumware is a big problem and can bog down systems to the point that
they will no longer boot. Unfortunately, none of the commercial or
free scanners will detect and remove 100%. You can get an idea by
downloading and running one of the free ones (Spybot Search and
Destroy, Spysweeper Trial edition or Adaware SE). If they don’t find
anything at all, you might be ok, but if they find anything
significant, and the system still is sluggish after removal, you will
need to post to a spyware removal forum for assistance on rooting out
the rest.
If it has always been slow... you don’t give the cpu specs, video card
type or RAM installed. XP is a resource hog compared to other OS, so
if you are running it on a sub 1GHZ celeron, PII, etc, it will be
slow. It has been our experience that anything less than 256MB RAM
will cause the system to be sluggish. Increasing RAM from 128MB to
256MB often cuts the time required to load programs by half. 512MB or
greater of RAM is even better.
Systems with integrated video adapters that share system memory will
also cause the system to be sluggish, since the system memory
typically isn’t as fast as the memory on dedicated video adapters.
Increased performance can often be seen by installing a PCI or AGP
video card in these cases.
