If you want just hardware then there is not reason to ask the question
"Build or Buy". You can't buy just a box from Dell or most other large
vendors, you have to go to a mom-and-pop shop for that.
It's a simple matter of fact, the better systems are hand-built by
qualified technicians who use better quality parts and design the system
around the intended use of the owner. The catch is that it doesn't mean
they are going to be cheaper than some generic system, it's all a matter
of the parts used (a 40GB drive comes in many variants and quality slots,
if you care it makes a difference in cost).
I can't tell you what is the best for your situation since I don't know
what you want to do with it and I don't know what Operating System or
Applications you'll be running.
