no -- i have to disagree. i am experiencing the exact same problem with an
ibm thinkpad laptop computer as well. it is running XP pro not two months
old. 192 mb ram installed, and it hasn't been the fastest little machine,
but the client is happy with it. i was called recently to pick it up and run
anti-spyware software on it for the client. installed and ran spybot 1.3,
adaware 1.05, and spysweeper 3.5 all with respective updates. machine
cleaned up nicely and i rebooted. cleaned out registry "run" directory of
all entries not needed for this user and cleared temporary inet files,
history, and cookies. rebooted. updated symantec corporate 9.0 virus
definitions, and then ran trend micro online virus scan and found no viruses
(only because from my experience the trend micro product seems to be a little
more effective). rebooted.

i had no problems with this install or this thinkpad until i decided to run
windows updates. i installed 13 high priority updates (i did not write down
which updates were downloaded and installed), but i chose not to install the
only optional hardware update for the machine - a motorola wireless pcmcia
card. upon rebooting, the system hangs. in safe mode, it hung at
agp440.sys. from recovery console, i disabled agp440.sys. rebooted and then
system hung at mup.sys. successfully disabled mup from recovery console and
rebooted. system hung at ndis.sys -- at this point it became apparant that
the system hang was being caused by something else and displaying the last
driver being initialized before hanging.

i ran e windows xp repair, but no luck. i reinstalled windows over the same
partition, but no luck. wrote a new partition boot sector onto the specified
partition with "fixboot" in recovery console, and repaired the master boot
record of the specified disk with "fixmbr" from the recovery console.
attempted to copy system, software, sam, security, and default files from
c:\windows\system32\config directory to a tmp directory in c:\windows\tmp,
and then copied new versions of those files from c:\windows\repair directory
in hopes of getting the system to boot so i could roll back to a system
restore point made during the spybot scan - but still no luck.
unfortunately, there is no way to restore a windows xp image to a former
system restore point from within the recovery console - you must be able to
boot into windows in order to restore back to a system restore point, or
uninstall the windows updates. hopefully longhorn will allow for system
restores from inside the recovery console. after 45 minutes of watching the
little blue bar intermittantly load across my screen, the os finally
initialized and allows for me to complete the new install of xp over the old
image. there is nothing wrong with my hardware, and i am suspect of at least
one of the updates i installed - i simply don't know which one. i just can't
imagine that this user with the same thinkpad laptop is having power problems
that ibm could troubleshoot or fix. i've read to many horror stories online
tonight about people experiencing the same hangs at the same point during xp
boot up on various different machines (hardware) for it to be all hardware
related. somebody has written some bogus code - with good intentions of
course - but bogus none the less, and lots of end users are suffering by it.
i apologize that i have no definite solution to help resolve this problem
yet, but if i should stumble upon something that i think might help, i'll
certainly post it here.
