XP stopped seeing memory flash stick

My XP installation suddenly stopped seeing memory flash stick.
It does not require a driver. The stick light is on, but it does not show up
in Windows Explorer.

When I run installation of new hardware it does not see any new hardware.

The stick and the USB post are OK as they work fine when I boot into w2k on
the same machine.

What might be a problem?
