Choppy sound playback could be due to an overtaxed system, which
could be caused by a truckload of adware and spyware. The place to
start would be to lean down your system, uninstalling or shutting
down all programs you don't actually need and use. It's possible
that more RAM might help. But before all else, get rid of any
malicious programs that have been installed.
Type "msconfig" at the Run line on the Start menu. Under the
Startup tab, uncheck everything that you don't absolutely need to
have running. Reboot and see if that makes a difference. You can
always recheck this crap, so trial and error isn't fatal.
Press Control+Alt+Delete to bring up Task Manager, and have a look
at your running programs. That might tell you something useful.
Run as many spyware removal programs as you can, and remove
everything they suggest. Your daughter might lose a spyware
program that she actually uses, but this is no tragedy, not if the
damn thing is preventing her from playing her music CDs. Run a few
antivirus programs as well, including an on-line antivirus or two.
My guess is that the computer is just so loaded down with garbage
that it has been brought to its knees, and that's why it won't
play CDs smoothly.
