Usually difficulties in installing an operating system stem from
hardware failures, with the RAM being the first thing to check. Make
sure you do not have any peripherals attached while you are doing an
install, also.

To run a RAM test, I like memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously
you'll need to get this from a working machine with an Internet
connection. If that machine has a cd burner and third-party burning
software, you can download the .iso to make a bootable cd. Otherwise,
download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy. Then
boot your own pc with the media you made. The test will run
immediately. If you get errors, replace the RAM.

If the RAM tests fine, then run a test on the hard drive with a
diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website.
