Hi, PALady4JC.

Before you reformat and start over, try a couple of things...

Unless you changed it, your Administrator account is still named
"Administrator" and the password is still "" - that is, Nil, or nothing.
Not even a space. Just hit Enter. Don't hit Escape; just Enter.

Once logged on as Administrator, be sure to create a new account for
yourself as AN administrator, rather than THE administrator. That is, make
a new account for "PALady" (or whatever) and be sure that it is in the
administrator group. Assign this new account a password, if you like. Do
all your future administrator work from this PALady account. Reserve THE
Administrator account for true emergencies, when you need God-like powers
over this computer. You didn't say if you are using WinXP Home or WinXP
Pro; there are a few differences between them in this area.

If that doesn't work, you might need to do a Repair Install, also known as
an in-place upgrade. This will reinstall WinXP itself, but it will not
require a reformat and it will leave your installed applications and data in
place. For details, see this KB article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

Others here can tell you how to deal with permissions. As a one-man,
one-computer kind of guy, I've never had to learn about those, but you may
need them to get back your Outlook and other files.
