I did as you said and was able to ping that machine, but pinging the other
one on the network would time out. I would appreciate any additional help.
also, when figured automatically, why would the Ip not be 192.168.... I saved
previous copies of IPconfig which did show it configured automatically with
the proper IP address. I have left it manually configured as you said with
the IP 192.168.1.2. and subnet 255.255.255.0
