slow computer

I have a problem opening files. Whenever I start the program (ex. Word,
Excel, etc.) and open the file using file open, the file opens up quickly.
However, if I were to try to open the file by simply double clicking on the
file, the computer takes a very long time to open the file. I have checked
that the file extensions are attributed to the correct program.

Would anyone be able to help?
