So you could reduce the image size by removing all the graphics files which
don't compress well AFAIK before imaging? Right?

I don't think making another partition would be practical.

I was thinking that a saved image could be restored to a new HDD in the event
of a failure of current HDD.

Prolly go with the second HDD and clone it. I think they're pretty reasonably
priced these days.
