Hi Craig,
TweakUI for Windows XP SP1 provides an option using which you can alter the default size and quality of thumbnail images. Download and install TweakUI from here
For XP SP1 and above:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
o Install TweakUI and run it.
o Double-click Explorer menu in the left, and choose Thumbnails
o Alter the Thumbnail Size (in pixels) - Default value being 96
The Thumbnail size and quality metrics are stored in the following registry keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"ThumbnailSize" (REG_DWORD)
