There is no true MS-DOS in XP -- 98SE does have true MS-DOS mode

Rember that XP is based upon the NT (New Technology) source code while 98SE
is based upon the 9x source code that has its roots back in MS-DOS.

XP has a command.com prompt but no true MS-DOS mode.

: XP may not recognize your floppy drive but I will bet that, baring a
: defective drive, you can still boot up into DOS with a properly prepared
: floppy. That is how you update the bios. Give it a try and see. Be certain
: to backup your old bios first. Also enter the old bios and write down the
: various settings as they are NOW. After a bios upgrade you will have to set
: the new bios accordingly.
:
: Last bit! If the bios update fails, DO NOT REBOOT OR TURN OFF YOUR
COMPUTER!
: If you do, you will/may be locked out of your system. Use another computer
: to go on-line and search Google to find out what your options are.
