Cannot Format Backup Tape

I have an HP DAT24x6i drive installed on my XP Pro system. I am attempting
to use the built in backup software to manage my system backups. So far,
things have gone well, but a very important tool is missing. I do not have
the option to format the tape. I have used previously formatted tapes and
the backup takes place, though it renames my media. I would appreciate any
help on this.

I have a second problem. I prefer to keep the media names on my tapes (I
have more than 100 of them) the same. I cannot figure out how to have the
backup software leave the media name untouched, but still replace the data on
the tape.
