Hello Will, and thank you for responding.

Yes, I had a variety of problems with ME before upgrading -- I had problems
with system restore, which I more or less shelved by stopping system restore
from starting up altogether. I also had some software problems -- attempting
to use Internet explorer would yield a kernel32.dll error, and I also shelved
that by installing netscape. None of these were terribly big problems, and
none of them had to do with booting up. ME always booted up well.

Thank you for providing the links. However, none of them seem to address my
problem. The first link is about how to prepare ME for upgrading to XP. But
as I have already installed XP and have gotten stuck upon rebooting, their
suggestions would have been more helpful in the past than the present. The
second link you provided attempts to solve a variety of problems:

• You receive a file copy error while the Setup program is running.
• The Setup program stops responding.
• Your computer stops responding, and a black screen appears.
• You receive a stop message when you run the Setup program.

None of which I have. I did not receive a file copy error during setup;
setup did not stop responding, but I did have a conflict with my virus
software which I chose to continue setup with. I repeat, the installation of
XP was reportedly finished and the computer was rebooted before I achieved my
actual problem. My computer did not stop responding exactly, and I did not
receive a stop message.

My problem is this -- I am aware that I likely installed XP with errors
because I did not appropriately prepare my computer for upgrade and every
time the computer is rebooted it runs a scandisk which may or may not find
errors. In any case, I cannot seem to get past the scandisk upon booting my
computer.

Here is what I would like some advice on: I would like to know how to
bypass the scandisk. Normally, XP scandisk can be stopped by pressing any
key within the first eight seconds, but I am not given that option. The scan
starts immediately, and pressing any key or combination of keys does not stop
the scandisk.

I would also be happy with some advice that would allow me to revert to my
ME installation. I noted during installation that my ME settings were backed
up. Even if that is faulty, I think I have an ME install disk. I think that
if I could revert to ME and reinstall XP the right way that I might not have
these problems. I understand that the Recovery Console can help do that
somehow -- while I can get to the recovery console, I don't know what to do
after that point. Opinions seem to differ depending on the exact problem.

Thanks again for your response,

Amaunette
