The problem is on a comp used only for gaming: no internet downloading except
from secure game servers. So low risk of virus/spyware infections. I
regularly run antivirus, spybot, adaware. Running WinXP Pro with SP2 from the
install disk.

Last night I updated windows media player. After required reboot I got a
message about a missing "login ui" file and a missing .dll. I dont remember
the exact "login ui" name and I dont remember the missing dll name. Ran for a
few more hours and shut down. At the shut down the error message appeared
again but automatically closed as the system shut down.

Now the system will not boot up. Goes to black screen, then black "windows
xp" load screen, then I get my pointer and a blue screen with the windows
logo. Usually I select my user, but the icons are not available. Alt+Tab,
Ctrl+X, Alt+F4, Ctrl+Alt+Del all do nothing, only thing to do is hit the
power button.

When booting to safemode I see the safemode desktop for a split second (with
the "safemode"s at the 4 corners) then goes to the blue login screen without
the login options.

Tried wsaupdater/userinit fix, and userpasswords2 fix, neither worked.
Eventually had to do a repair install and problem is fixed.

Is there anything else I need to worry about? Any faster workarounds? Is
this a media player bug? Should I just go back to never using media player?

Repair installs are a pain...

thx
