In my case, see separate "thread" as my original post spawned two.....
For me, it was McAfee -- seems when I installed a newer version and backed
it out, it did not back out cleanly and conflicted with the prior version.
Once I knew which service caused the problem (using MSCONFIG and enabling one
at a time), I irradicated it, reinstalled McAfee and all is well.
Note: sharing network folders does seem to cause excessively long waits i(my
experience anyway) for the first invokation.
