Hey xcrappy,
I wouldn't give up on trying out some of the newer recovery (forensic)
software to see what you can recover. My son made a BIG screwup when he was
trying to install a new operating system on an old 40 gig HDD we were not
using any more. He took out the 100 gig HDD had been using as his primary
"C" drive, set it aside, installed the OS on the 40 gig HDD, then for some
unexplained reason, accidentally formatted the 100 gig HDD and created a new
20 gig partition on it. After realizing his screw-up, I installed
"GetDataBack for NTFS 2.31" on my computer (get the trial versionat
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2773.html ), then plugged his messed up
HDD on my computer (as a slave drive) and ran the software to see what I
could recover. Without a lot of trouble, I managed to recover about 95% of
the information stored on the messed up HDD. It can be a bit time
consuming, but it's well worth the effort if you've got important data you
want to recover. You'll need to have enough free HDD space on a HDD to
transfer the files you want to reccover. I see you already looked at the HDD
with the above mentioned program. Did you make any attempts to
recover/transfer the info you want recovered onto another HDD? If not, do
it. If you have the success I've had each time I've used GetDataBack, you
should be able to recover most, if not all of the contents on the screwed up
HDD.
If the info on the HDD can be easily replaced, you might just go ahead and
format the HDD and start all over.
There are other recovery/forensic software programs available, so give one a
try before giving up on the drive. Just be sure the trial software is fully
functional during the trial period so you get the full benefits it has to
offer.
As for the others who posted about your predicament, I guess they're so
darn smart, they've never had to ask anyone about problems they may have had
with their systems. I find it interesting that they went out of their way to
make stupid, uncalled for remarks about you messing up your HDD. Making
people posting request for help feel dumb shouldn't be what these forums are
about.
Good luck, and have a great New Year.
