Display is only 4 colors after reinstall

How do I get back to regular color ranges?? Helping a friend with a computer
(Gateway, P4 1.8GHz, 128MB RAM) that was messed up. I think they just weren't
doing any maintenance. Daughter said her classmate reformatted the drive &
reinstalled the WinXP Pro OS. Now there are only 4 colors. I know I have to
do something with updating video drivers, but I'm not sure how to proceed.
(Did this before for a different computer, but it was a couple years ago.)
Please help.
