MS has said that it will be fixed. However the code is complex and needs thought. The programmer that looked the code up doesn't work on that part of IE and didn't remember what the max files value was.

The implications are

With large disks the size of the cache tends to be large (10% of space - fine on a 1 gig disk, not so fine on a 160 gig disk). So this problem will occur when
(average size of files x number of file) < size of cache.

As only the size of cache is known this means trial and error. I think, as a general principal, the advice should be reduce the size of the cache to prevent it reoccuring. However the user may have untypically been viewing sites with large numbers of small files.

The point here is that people use different sites so one person's average size of files will be different to any other user. I download lots of large pdfs (others download mp3) so my average size of files will be different and larger than someone who plays backgammon at yahoo.

The other point to make is that one wants the cache to be bigger than the largest file one downloads so interupped downloads can be restarted.
