First have you tried using Last Known Good Configuration. Restart the
computer repeatedly pressing the F8 key to get to the Boot menu. Select Last
Known Good Config and see if that gets you in. If not then see if you can
run System Restore from a Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Command Prompt
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

If the above doesn't work the do a clean install of XP making certain no
peripherals like cameras, scanners, printers, usb drives etc are connected.
If possible do a bare bones install. You can add devices back again later.
If you can get to the Desktop do not Activate immediately or go on-line in
anyway. First ensure that you turn on the MS Firewall. Then apply SP2. You
are better off if you can install SP2 from a file rather than the Windows
Update Site. If you have access to a system with a fast download and a
CD-Burner go here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en
and click the Download button then burn the file to disc to run on your
computer. Once your have SP2 installed visit the Windows update site to grab
other security patches.

Once XP is running properly create a System Restore Point. Then start adding
your peripherals.
