If you use the proper type of program and the correct sequencing it does
not matter where the files are physically located on the drive.
Defrag the drive. Then boot up the computer using the 2-floppy disks
created from within Partition Magic 8.01. Shrink/reduce the partition in
question. Then create a new partition in the free space created. Format
the partition.
On a large drive with many files this can take hours. Also, a power
failure during the process could leave you with a computer that is
dysfunctional. I typically allow this type of process to occur over
night as I sleep. I also have my computer connected to a UPS system.
But, if the power were to go off for an extended amount of time I would
still be screwed as the UPS gives me only 7-8 minutes of reserve power.
The procedure is never 100% safe. Backup all your important data!
