Hi, Peter.
What kind of hardware is involved here? Specifically, what kind of hard
drives?
When Win2K first arrived, nearly 5 years ago, we frequently encountered a
problem at that point: when the text portion of Setup was finished and the
computer tried for the first time to boot from the HD (rather than the CD)
and start the GUI phase of Setup. The problem was that the Win2K CD-ROM did
not have the proper drivers for whatever HD we were trying to use as the
boot device. The symptom usually was a BSOD with Stop code 007B,
Inaccessible_Boot_Device.
The WinXP CD-ROM is 20 months (or more) newer than the Win2K CD-ROM and has
drivers for many more of the newer HDs, but some of the newest one still
must be installed from floppy during Setup. SATA drives, for example, often
need drivers that are not on the WinXP CD. Even though you don't report
Stop 007B, your symptoms sound like missing HD drivers might be the problem.
To install these drivers, we must have them on a floppy diskette. (If a
drivers diskette did not come with the drive, you will need to get the
drivers from the manufacturer and put them onto a floppy, since Setup
doesn't know how to install them from any other source.) Then boot from the
WinXP CD-ROM and watch for the invitation, early in the Setup process, to
Press F6 to install drivers for SCSI or other mass storage devices. Press
F6 quickly, then wait while Setup seems not to notice and continues to
install hundreds of files. Finally, it will stop with instructions onscreen
for how to use that floppy to install the drivers. Then Setup will run to
conclusion, including rebooting from the HD.
If that is not the answer in your case, please post back with a description
of your hardware configuration, especially your hard disk drive, including
size, partition and format details - and which interface (SCSI, SATA, IDE?)
it uses.
