CD-ROM Drive Automatically Opens by Itself

I've encountered bizare problem on home PC (HP Pentium IV) running XP Home
Edition with SP2. For some strange reason, my internal CD-ROM R/W drive
starts to open and shut by itself automatically. This happens
intermittently. I could start the PC up and not have a problem for an hour
or so, and then all of sudden the CD-ROM drive goes int automatic open and
shut mode. Sometimes it will do it repeatedly for 10 min or longer. Other
times, it will be intermittent. More background facts are: (1) PC is 2 yrs
old and has always worked fine. CD-ROM drive was never a problem. XP SP2
installed over a month ago without incident and CD-ROM drive worked fine
after installation. (2) There been no HW or SW installs immediately before
this problem began. (3) My unsuccessful Fix attempts todate included: [A]
Reverted back to earlier system version before the problem surfaced [B] Went
to control panel/system/hardware device manager to uninstall the CD-ROM then
restarted the PC to have the driver reloaded. [C] Did both uninstalls and
disables of CD-ROM but problem still continue. (Note: problem still exists
in Safe mode. [D] Virus detection software did not uncover a virus. [E] I
contacted the HP support center and they have not come up with a fix.

The CD-ROM is a Philips drive that uses a Microsoft driver. Help! This
is driving me crazy. I may just physically remove the drive unless someone
comes up with a viable fix. FYI, other than the automatic opening and
closing, the CD-ROM drive works fine, that is, I read files from it and write
files to a CD inserted in the drive. Help!!! Rob
