There's only one guarantee when it comes to hard drives. Someday they will
fail!! This could be something as simple as a loose cable. Good computing
practice dictates that one should always have current backups of important
data. If this is not the case, DO IT NOW! and not to a different location on
the same hard drive. Once this is done, run diagnostic software on the
drive. Your drive manufacturer's website should offer free diagnostics for
this purpose. Or do a Google search for third party software. One that I
recommend, (but it's not free) is SpinRite , available at www.grc.com Also,
open the case and remove/replace both the data cable and the power cable to
the drive (both ends of the data cable). This however, must be done with the
system turned off. Drives are relatively inexpensive today and not very
painful to replace. Other possibilities could also include a failing power
supply or motherboard. Good luck.
