How is an educated user going to use their infected/compromised computer
to learn about security unless they have a clean computer to start with?

Ah, I agree that education is the best solution, but, sometimes, when
the infection is beyond the ability of the user to treat it, amputation
IS the best answer - at last before it spreads to everything.

Educating a user needs to take place, and I've always advocated that,
which is why my posts don't say JUST WIPE/RESTORE, I almost always
include instructions on how to reinstall and not get compromised while
rebuilding/updating.

But, if we rely on them to clean their systems, knowing as little as
they do, there may never be a circle, it may just be a flat line -
always infected. While a competent security tech might be able to fully
clean a system, the vast majority of the people posting about
compromised systems in these groups are not capable, at their current
level, of completely cleaning a system. Education starts with installing
a clean system and the instructions on how to setup a clean computer
from scratch.
