You need to have a firewall active before going online. If you don't
have a third party firewall use XP's in built one. Turn it on before
going online. Get to it from Start | Control Panel | Network and
Internet Connections | Network Connections. Highlight your connection,
double click on it, Properties, Advanced. XP's firewall is ok, but it
only deals with inbound traffic. You really should use one of the third
party ones that block both incoming and outbound to block any nasties on
your system that are trying to "phone home". There are several to
choose from and each offers free and paid versions. Here are three good
ones.

The primary update you should install is SP2. There maybe a few others
to add after that but this is the main one. Make sure your system can
handle SP2 before applying it.
