No "Painless" way, but here is an option. Microsoft offers a 45
day free trial of it's Virtual PC software. It allows you to run a
complete OS in a protected/virtual environment.
If you have original Windows 9x/ME install media you can get
the trial version of VPC-2004 and create a Virtual machine.
If your computer has a Network Interface card you can create
a membership with your existing XP Workgroup.
Once you have your 9X/ME install running you can recover the
data from the backup and then network the data to your XP
instance.
Not at all easy - but it can be done. Virtual PC's work just like
any other with a BIOS setup, Virtual drives, etc. VPC-2004 does
not support USB devices but that shouldn't hinder you from
recovering your data using VPC.
The trial download version is found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=360cafd6-5098-4c64-9ca7-a30f225859f6&DisplayLang=en

There is also a MS Newsgroup for Virtual PC 2004
The learning curve to use the software is probably a couple of
hours.
