One thing you can do is to simply re-install Windows XP. If you do this you
will have to re-install all of your applications but your data (if not
corrupted by a bad HD) will be intact. Do NOT choose to format, repartition,
or otherwise modify the existing disk configuration during installation!
Another avenue would be to purchase a new HD and install XP there mounting
your existing HD as a D: drive. This would allow you to be extra sure that
nothing changes on your existing disk driver during XP installation. Of
course you would have to change drive jumpers to make this disk a slave and
the new one a master.
One thing you might want to be careful about is the reason that this
happened in the first place. Even if you do not connect this machine to the
network I would not rule out virus, trojan, various evil software. You have
to transfer data to this machine somehow correct? CD-ROM, floppy, USB drive
or whatever. Also, you might have a bad HD.
