Before you even think another minute about reinstalling XP, fix the problems.
Download, install, update and scan with Adaware SE:

Both of my computers, run 24/7 with 8 hours of actual work per day over the
past three years. Never reinstalled. But I keep it clean of spyware and
viruses.
Windows XP Pro comes with an excellent Back up program. If you are using XP
Home, it does not come with the Back up program installed, Some manufacturers
didn't place it on the disk shipped with the computer. You may download the
backup program from our Computer Club's site:
