Actually I have done both, about 5 years ago.

Your explanation doesn't account for what I'm seeing:

I checked the IP address of my old computer:
169.254.214.4

My printer will print out it's IP address:
192.168.123.100

I went upstairs and checked my wife's laptop:
192.168.123.1

The old computer IP address is real confusing to me. From my new computer, I
can access files on the other two computers with no problem. All computers can
write to the printer.

History:
When I upgraded my Windows, my VPN stopped working. I don't use it a lot, but
I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, complete with Sygate. About that time,
one of my plugs on my router broke and I replaced it. I had to change the
default address of the router so that the 3rd number matched what my old router
had (123 instead of 0) before my computers could access the internet or my
printer.

It appears that Sygate is stopping my other computers from accessing my main
computer. I periodically get windows telling me that NT Kernel was blocked.

The Sygate that my work has me install is not configurable (all the
configuration menus are greyed out)

I've been working with the guy at work who's in charge of the VPN. He has had
me:
1. Tell Sygate to update itself - this won't work with the VPN down.
2. Turn off Windows XP firewall. I've done this a few times in this testing
without luck.
3. Make sure my router has PPTP pass thru enabled (it is).

Meanwhile I am trying to figure out why my computer's IP addresses appear to be
what I assigned to them before they had Windows XP. Maybe that would give us a
clue on what we need to do next.
