LOL

I went through that earlier in the year when I accidently
changed the permissions on certain registry keys (in the
end I ended up reinstalling XP to get everything back
into a workable condition).

The file association could have changed, been deleted,
or the permissions inside the registry could have changed,
I'm thinking.

An antivirus won't help in such a case, because the anti-
virus will not run (cannot get permissions or because it is
an executable).

I would suggest reinstalling XP. That is the best bet. She
might need to go into the BIOS to get the system to boot
up off an XP CD. I'm not familiar with the version of XP
she has or what type of support comes with the CD.

If she needs some more help she can post back with the
version of XP she is using, the type of computer she owns
ie, Dell, Gateway, etc.

I've seen Gateway put the XP reinstall files inside the
following folder:

C:\i386
