How many people besides himself use the computer and have accounts setup? If
he never set a password before does it accept a blank password (simply
pressing the Enter Key or clicking the enter button) or is it denying him
access? If it is denying him access then perhaps someone has logged on with
administrator privileges and created a password for the account.

He might try logging on to an Administrator account and removing the
password. If he has XP Home and needs to access an Administrator account he
needs to boot to Safe Mode and then select the Administrator account. By
default XP Home creates a hidden Administrator account during initial
installation. The password for this account is blank. Go to Control
Panel->User accounts and see if his account is identified as being password
protected. If so he can select "Change an account->click on the account
icon->select Remove my password". If he is the only user of the system he
might want to, from the User Accounts main screen select "Change the way
users log on and off". Then ensure both the boxes are checked.

check here if the above doesn't help
