Windows suddenly looking for password

A friend of mine told me when he started windows up today, it won't let him log
into his account now without a password. Basically it shows the screen where
your list of people with accounts is shown in a list with your little picture
icon and username..
Anyone know why suddenly a password would get attached where you didn't have one
before? He says he never set a password..
