Hi,
A dual boot is a good idea until you sort it out, and yes you can later
remove the WinME installation. The problem you are mainly encountering is a
lack of proper drive support for the system. The specifications you gave are
sufficient to run XP, but the Compaq hardware isn't supported "out of the
box" in the retail version of WinXP. You are going to need to locate proper
modem and display drivers, preferably from the device manufacturers though
you might be able to find some on the HP/Compaq support site.
